Cadence is an inland city situated upon the upriver stretches of the River Sinfonia in southern Illuminatia. Cadence is Illuminatia's 20th-largest city and it's the second-largest city situated upon the river, after Symphony.
Cadence is an urban city of moderate density. Ranking among Illuminatia's largest secondary settlement cities, Cadence was not settled at the site of a Lucidus landing but instead grew out of a town established by expedition forces traveling northward from Symphony and related settlements. Cadence became a trading outpost due to its proximity to significant regional natural resources extraction activities.
As of the 250 AI Census, Cadence had a population of 673,278 residents. The city has experienced significant growth since then, and it is estimated the city will have a population over 1,300,000 by the 300 AI Census. This increase of approximately 200% over 50 AU is expected to increase the city's rank by one position to 19th in Illuminatia by population.
While Cadence, like most of Illuminatia, has enjoyed an impressive population growth, the city's economic growth has hampered by its lack of geographic proximity to other substantial urban centers. This has been reflected in the city's tendency to reach certain economic and commercial benchmarks on a somewhat delayed schedule relative to its peer cities of a similar size located in other regions. Nonetheless, Cadence has become one of the top economic centers of the portion of Illuminatia west of the Transilluminatian Range.
The economy in Cadence remains dominated by the natural resources trade and extraction industries, with the economic and physical infrastructure necessary to support the transportation and marketing of raw goods. The city is also the region's major supplier of support services for resource extraction. Cadence is the natural resources hub of Illuminatia, with industries specializing only in the responsible and sustainable extraction of resources. The Bureau of Natural Resources maintains has a large presence here and the Cadence region is a prime model of the BNR's system of sustainable resource management.
The most significant institution of secondary education in Cadence is the College of Academic Pursuits. The most prominent banking institution in Cadence is the Cadence Mint and Trust. Cadence is represented in the National Sportsball League by the Cadence Cropdusters.
As with much of southern Illuminatia, Cadence was settled by members from the second multiversal duplication of the Lucidus III ship. Cadence lies on a major transportation and trade route between the South Coast Megalopolitan Complex and the West Coast Megalopolitan Complex and serves as an important midpoint between the cities of Symphony and Rhapsody.
Cadence, like many of Illuminatia's largest cities, finds the origin of its name in musical terminology.
