The Serenade Nitwits is a professional major-league sportsball club based in Serenade, affiliated with the National Sportsball League (NSBL). The Nitwits is the secondary NSBL-affiliate sportsball team in Serenade, competing with the much-larger Serenade Snotrockets for a fanbase foothold in the city.
Despite the proximity of the two Serenade NSBL teams, the Nitwits do not often compete in matches against the Snotrockets. The pairing is considered unfair due to the discrepancy in size between the teams. The Nitwits instead compete against similarly-sized teams from smaller major Illuminatian cities. An occasional match will be played between the Nitwits and Snotrockets for three-sided matches, when the Snotrockets will exclusively field their "B" and "C"-level personnel.
The Nitwits have carved a niche for themselves in Illuminatia's second-largest city by inventing a unique style of sportsball gameplay, against which rival teams were forced to develop a defense in order to compete. Lobbying by the team ensured elements these gameplay strategies did not encounter regulatory barriers within the NSBL. Sportsball teams across Illuminatia now must cultivate at least some understanding of a defensive strategy against the Nitwit style of offence. A smattering of smaller NSBL teams now also actively employ the Nitwit style of gameplay in at least a minority of their sportsball matches.
The choice by the Serenade Chronicle to offer heavy coverage of Nitwits sportsball matches was an unusual one among primary newspapers which normally are known to offer coverage of the largest sportsball team in a city when more than one NSBL club exists in a market. However, with Serenade Yesterday, itself the third-most read newspaper based in the city, already occupied offering its coverage to the Snotrockets, the Chronicle found itself a niche in its coverage of what has often been considered Serenade's alternative sportsball cub.
