Recreational exsanguination refers to the non-competitive, non-therapeutic temporary draining of a significant portion—if not the majority—of blood from the body of a consenting living human participant for the entertainment or thrill-seeking objectives of the individual experiencing the exsanguination as well as that of spectators. Recreational exsanguination is a non-mainstream recreational activity in Illuminatia and is heavily regulated.

Customarily, recreational exsanguination involves utilizing the assistance of an exsanguination services provider. The exsanguination is almost always non-permanent and non-disabling, with the liberated blood-related bodily fluids first collected from the subject undergoing the procedure, filtered, reconstituted as needed with biological and synthetic ingredients, and then reinserted back into the subject's circulatory system shortly after the completion of the exsanguination. A person undergoing a recreational exsanguination might first experience minor pain, unusual sensations, feelings of euphoria and ecstasy, and then eventually unconsciousness as the process concludes.

Recreational exsanguination is marginally more popular as a leisurely pursuit than recreational dismemberment and recreational decapitation, which tend to require greater levels of anesthetization, more complex medical support following the incident, and longer periods of recuperation. Additionally, a single recreational exsanguination experience tends to be roughly 30% less expensive than an equivalent basic recreational dismemberment, making the leisure activity more accessible to a broader population of Illuminatians.

Recreational exsanguination is closely regulated by the Office of Death and Dismemberment (ODD) to ensure the safety of those seeking exsanguination experiences. The ODD maintains strict regulation over all recreational exsanguination experience providers due to the nature of exsanguination which, under poor conditions and without the appropriate medical support, has the potential to result in death or other forms of permanent health consequences. Exsanguination is not practiced competitively in Illuminatia and no form of gambling or wagering on the outcome of a recreational exsanguination is permitted, by order of the ODD. Non-consensual exsanguination is not permissible in Illuminatia. All exsanguination experiences involve a thorough, arduous documentation of fully-informed consent by persons able to provide consent.

Advanced medical support techniques developed aboard the Lucidus mission and perfected early in Illuminatian history allowed for more extreme recreational activities involving risks of various forms of injury to human participants. It was only inevitable that the most extreme of thrill-seekers might demand more dangerous leisure experiences, such as recreational exsanguination and recreational dismemberment. Recreational exsanguination was the first of these leisure activities to reach the mass market. The success of medical providers in bringing expired enthusiasts back to life after undergoing partial exsanguinations lead to further extremes in recreational activities, culminating in a government agency meant to regulate the activities, inventions of devices to make the activities safer, and specialized resanguination clinics and other medical providers able to deliver highly specialized types of care.
