Pronouns in Illuminatian language
Pronouns utilized the official and unofficial languages spoken in Illuminatia are not gender-based or sex-based and otherwise do not generally pertain to any real or perceived immutable human traits. Pronouns, when used, instead reflect other variables by which people might vary from one another in a relative or social context. Pronouns used in Illuminatia's languages are complex and not necessarily binary.
Glossa Communi maintains a diverse system of pronouns that refer to a variety of binaries and spectra that might apply to two or more people who are being referred to. These most often refer to one's situational social position, such as one's status as either an elder or youth, supervisor or subordinate, teacher or student, seller or buyer, provider or recipient, host or visitor, speaker or listener, instigator or reactor, requestor or requestee, historical or contemporary figure, or as care provider or patient. The examples which most often refer to a binary follow a similar morphological paradigm in Glossa Communi with affixes that relate to the type of difference between people in question. Even when the social status or roles of the individuals being referred to are unclear, the pronouns relating to instigator or reactor are usually still usable, however Glossa Communi does provide for a pronoun set that may be used when the people being referred to are of a relative equal or indistinguishable position and also lack obvious cues as to who instigated the interaction. This neutral set of pronouns, however, does have the quality of having multiple pronouns, which allow arbitrary assignment.
The Protolucidian languages diverge in how they use pronouns, but generally maintain a much larger constellation of pronouns than Glossa Communi. While maintaining the essence of the most basic pronoun sets used in Glossa Communi, the Protolucidian languages also developed dialogue-based pronouns that adjust for the parts that interlocutors play in speech as they change throughout a conversation and also adapt to the observer's opinion of the situation. The Protolucidian languages are more likely to use pronouns that adjust in small increments along a gradient or a spectrum.
To allow for the most equitable and enlightened human civilization possible upon Neonisi upon settlement of Illuminatia, Lucidus mission preparation protocols demanded that Glossa Communi, the invented language used in Illuminatia, may not utilize the gender construct and must only utilize pronouns that do not assume or draw attention to physical human traits. Mission planners wished most of all to avoid the gender-based inequities that plagued Earthly civilization; they also wanted to avoid apparatus ingrained in language that might promote discrimination and judgment based on non-merit-based differences among people. As such, Glossa Communi broke ground in linguistics in its development of its elegant pronoun system.
The guidelines used for the settlement and development of civilization in Illuminatia barred officials from using or inventing pronouns based on any physical or immutable trait whatsoever, and these directives were followed as Illuminatian language slowly evolved to welcome societal situations unique to the developing culture on this new world. Pronouns relating to elder/youth divergence or differences in cumulative experience or learnedness were among the few pronouns potentially related to these immutable characteristics to be allowed and recommended because they were seen as unavoidable and constructive in reference to relative position especially in a command situation such as was prevalent aboard the Lucidus mission.
Illuminatian mass media will often default to a simplified set of pronouns based on the instigator/reactor or provider/recipient dichotomy to avoid unnecessary complication, especially when a potentially noisy communication channel might be in use, such as a wireless broadcast. Aural mass communication will utilize a reduced set of pronouns due to a lack of visual cues. Literature is known to utilize the widest assortment of pronouns, as narratives and stories provide a surplus of context that can be used to ascertain the pronoun that might be used for some of the more intricate social situations. Amalgamated historical figures are normally referred to using the more-experienced or elder pronoun, as the amalgamated historical figures are generally only encountered in situations in which they represent an entity in an elevated or lauded position of greater insight, accomplishment, or intelligence relative to the observer in the present.
