Polyphonic electronic contemporary instrumental music
Polyphonic electronic contemporary instrumental (PECI) music is an Illuminatian music genre involving complex instrumental compositions performed at consistent tempos with electronic instruments dominant in the sound profile. PECI music is performed by individuals or small groups, with live performance by individuals normally augmented by pre-programmed routines triggered by performer interaction. PECI music can be compared to archaeomodern Earthly EDM music, which is where PECI music finds much of its inspiration.
PECI exists in live performance and is a well-appreciated wireless broadcasting format, heard on wireless stations in all major Illuminatian cities. Musical works in the PECI format average from less than 1 TU in duration to more than 3 TU. Some artists may create lengthy compositions that transform between sections or movements in much the same way as Polyphonic acoustic instrumental symphonic (PAIS) works, though these compositions are rare. Most PECI tunes are easily consumable in a short sitting with only a moderate attention span.
Polyphonic electronic contemporary instrumental music has existed since Illuminatia's settlement, with Lucidus mission occupants dabbling in the genre within the same environment as other established native music styles, like PAIS and syncopated instrumental improvisational collaborative (SIIC) music. Elements have been exchanged among these styles throughout Illuminatian history, however they all remain distinct in style.
PECI music generally avoids dissonance, and when it does delve into dissonance it handles it gently and resolves it in a controlled fashion. The majority of PECI music centers around two distinct tempos—a moderate danceable tempo and a slower loungeable tempo—though a sizeable repertoire of the genre settles in tempos between the two tempos. One subgenre exists in PECI music dominated by compositions of very slow tempo often appreciated for its relaxing effects; a second subgenre is dedicated to PECI pieces that wildly exceed common dance tempos and in fact are found to be difficult to dance to.
