Mingus is a major city situated upon the upper extent of Adamopolitan River in inland central Illuminatia. An urban city of moderate density, Mingus is one of the largest Illuminatian cities not to be a primary settlement city.

Mingus is Illuminatia's preeminent center for the performing arts and is most notable for its music performance and education institutions. Home to Illuminatia's largest institutions of higher education dedicated to the teaching, study, and advancement of music performance, the city is known for its conservatories. Music education is prominent at all education levels in the metropolitan area, with most primary schools making music and performing arts a pillar in the overall foundational education structure. The Mingus Plan for music education is respected and widely mimicked across Illuminatia. The largest institution of tertiary education in the city is the University of Relative Enlightenment, which attracts students from across Illuminatia with its advanced degrees in the rhetorical arts, audio engineering, music performances, and other specialties.

The prominent newspaper serving Mingus is the Mingus Mirror. Mingus is represented in the National Sportsball League by the Mingus Tossers. Capital Access Corporation is a major banking institution based here. Mingus is Illuminatia's largest producer of string basses and is a significant producer of other fine string instruments.

As of the 250 AI Census, Mingus had a population of 782,033 residents, making it the continent's 18th-largest city. The city has experienced significant growth since then, and it is estimated the city will have a population over 1,500,000 by the 300 AI Census, or an increase of approximately 200% over 50 AU.

Mingus maintains a moderate climate, with relatively cold winters and moderately warm summers. The city's terrain is hilly near the Adamopolitan River. Residences, offices, and other accommodations with easterly views are highly coveted in Mingus thanks to the near-panoramic distant views of the northern reaches of the Timmons Range.

As with much of central Illuminatia within the Adamopolitan River system, Mingus was settled by members from the first multiversal duplication of the Lucidus I ship. A secondary settlement city, Mingus was established by expedition forces traveling northward from Adamopolis and ascertained its prominence as a major city thanks to its convenient location as the midpoint along the route between Adamopolis and Serenade.

Mingus was named in honor of an ancient Earthly jazz double bassist and composer.
